I've spent the last many years helping adults and adolescents with personal problems, personal growth, and mental health issues/disorders. In my practice, I use evidence-based traditional counseling techniques. One of the most challenging engagements was to work with individuals in the Delaware County Jail, resolving substance abuse and addiction issues. No matter which client I'm working with, I often see how a shift in energy levels and perceptions can move people into a more positive state, and improve their lives.
I became interested in sound therapy several years ago while on vacation in Las Vegas. When going on vacation by myself, I typically engage in alternative holistic medicine in order to expand my knowledge, and learn about new techniques which may benefit my clients. While attending a kundalini yoga class, I had my first encounter with how sound and vibration can impact the body. When I first walked in, I had noticed the gongs in the front of the room. However, during the class and the pranayama breathing, we were just listening to soothing music which was being played throughout the room. Towards the end of the class, the instructor had asked everyone to turn and face the back wall, while relaxing into a meditative state. As the instructor guided the class, and the music was still playing, I quickly noticed a shift in the room, my body, and my level of consciousness. Unfortunately, I wasn't prepared for something like this, and my curiosity quickly took me out of the relaxed state. I knew that something very different was taking place in the room and in my body, but wasn't quite sure what was happening. I was feeling a vibration throughout my body that I had never experienced before. I decided to look over my shoulder to see what was happening and caught a glimpse of the instructor playing several gongs. When I left the class, I knew that my physical state had changed and something was very different.
I returned to Columbus, after vacation, determined to find this type of meditation/therapy. Unfortunately, I found none. However, what I did find was a business in Youngstown that specialized in sound therapy. Like everyone else, I had put this on my list of things "to do" in the future, but hesitated for quite some time to make the trip. It was a long drive and I just didn't have time on the weekends, due to seeing clients on Saturdays
During the next year, I took a vacation to Hawaii and once again, decided to book several sessions of alternative medicine to educate myself and experience something new. I set up a full day Maui Retreat with three different practitioners and experienced:
Meridian Energetic Healing and Chakra Clearing,
Zen Shiatsu, and
Acupuncture
While experiencing these types of alternative medicine, I felt the same type of sensations in my body that I did in Las Vegas. All were shifting and releasing the negative energies in my body. Afterwards, I noticed that my sleep patterns had changed, my mood was more positive, and I was much more relaxed than I had been in years. A huge shift had taken place in the state of my mind and body. It was a biological upgrade.
After returning from Hawaii, I began making the 2.5 hrs trip to Youngstown, on the weekends, over and over again, to experience sound therapy and learn more about it. The owners had been in business for many years and had mastered the art. I could see that they had a thriving business and were helping many people learn to relax and shift the energy in their bodies.
One weekend, while driving home from Youngstown, I began to zone out on the drive and my mind began to relax. What I realize now was that my brain waves began to shift into a different state and I became receptive to information. A very clear thought came to me... much more like "a knowing" and it was.... "there's nothing in Columbus" As a counselor, you begin to recognize the difference between the chatter in your mind, and the clear messages being sent to you, that usually are intended to be used to help others. The challenge is to learn to trust your intuition and go with it. I had also been searching for a way to have a multi-purpose room and be able to engage clients in group dynamics; like running support groups, group therapy, marriage seminars, etc. Creating this large room would support those ideas, also.
I decided to trust my gut and go with it. I spent many months educating myself about sound therapy, and began purchasing and learning to play many of the instruments that you will see in The Sound Room at Polaris. The birth of this business has been over several months and years, and it has all finally come to fruition. After working with the landlord and construction crew for several months, and re-configuring the new office space, The Sound Room opened it's doors for business on Feb 7th, 2022! It is my intention to make The Sound Room a wellness center, where many different types therapies and modalities can be experienced. It is my intention that The Sound Room will be the premier site in Columbus for alternative therapies for mental health and substance abuse.
Many types of holistic alternative medicine may be very new to many of you, and for starters, may appear to be "way outside the box" But just remember it's all about energy, frequency, and vibration. We are energetic beings with electrical impulses throughout our brain, heart, and body. That brain that you have is a combination of electrical impulses and chemicals (don't ever take all those thoughts too seriously). Even when I'm counseling individuals, with traditional talk therapy and counseling techniques, I'm still just helping the client shift the energy in their brain and body. Using sound therapy in The Sound Room at Polaris is just one more way to help keep the energy of the the body, mind, and spirit aligned and healthy. It gives you one hour to just be, wind down, shift on that parasympathetic nervous system, and release that negative energy that we accumulate day after day. Give it a try.... you won't be disappointed.
